Take care of your trees. They are the most valuable asset of your landscape. They can actually increase your property’s value up to 20 %. Mature trees have roots that can reach beyond the longest branch – this is called the “drip line.”
Protect your trees during a drought by making sure water is distributed evenly, and all the way out to the drip line. Evergreen trees need water to extend 3 -5 feet farther, past the drip line. Weekly watering is ideal, but water at least 3 times a month from early spring through September for adequate irrigation in Denver. Water early in the morning, or in the evening.
Maintain moisture with mulch. A 3-4” layer of wood chips around the tree, but not touching the trunk, is best.
Never fertilize your trees during drought conditions. The nitrogen can harm roots.
