The concept of xeriscape began in 1981, with the Colorado Water Department. It is a method of landscaping in Denver, especially used in dry climates. The objective is to conserve the water supplies in areas susceptible to drought. Plants are not completely limited to cacti, but can include ornamental grasses such as Pampa. Rock gardens may be introduced, and patios extended to take up the space previously dominated by extensive lawns. Native wildflowers are popular in xeriscaping, along with plants that can easily adapt to the existing environmental conditions.
